Madhur Jaffrey

Madhur Jaffrey was born in 1933 in Delhi, India, into a well-to-do family that prized education and the arts. She moved to London in the 1950s to study acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and later settled in New York, where she built a career as an actress and cookbook author. Her dual life—performer on stage and screen, and chronicler of Indian home cooking—shaped her singular voice.

Jaffrey is best known for her landmark cookbook *An Invitation to Indian Cooking* (1973), which introduced generations of Western readers to the subtleties of Indian cuisine. She followed with *Madhur Jaffrey's Indian Cooking* (1982), *A Taste of India* (1985), and *Vegetarian India* (2015), among many others. Her work is distinguished by precise, personal instruction and a deep reverence for regional traditions, from the spice blends of the north to the coconut curries of the south.

*An Invitation to Indian Cooking* was a critical and commercial success, praised for demystifying Indian food without compromising authenticity. Jaffrey became a household name in Britain and America through her BBC television series *Madhur Jaffrey's Indian Cookery* (1982), which won a James Beard Award. She has been celebrated as the 'queen of Indian cooking' in the English-speaking world, though some purists initially questioned her adaptations for Western kitchens.

Jaffrey is widely credited with transforming Indian food from an exotic niche into a staple of Western home cooking. Her books remain in print decades after first publication, and her influence is visible in the work of later cookbook authors such as Raghavan Iyer and Meera Sodha.
