Jane Roberts

On Jane Roberts
A brief life
Jane Roberts was born in 1929 in Albany, New York, and spent most of her life in Elmira, New York, where she worked as a writer and poet. In 1963, she began channeling a personality she called Seth, a process that produced a series of remarkable texts over the next two decades until her death in 1984. Her early career included poetry and short fiction, but the Seth Material became the defining work of her life.
On the page
Roberts is best known for the Seth Books, a series of works dictated by the entity Seth, beginning with *The Seth Material* (1970) and including *Seth Speaks* (1972) and *The Nature of Personal Reality* (1974). These books explore the nature of consciousness, the construction of reality through belief, and the multidimensional self. Her work also includes poetry and novels such as *The Education of Oversoul Seven*, which blend metaphysical themes with narrative.
In their time
The Seth Material gained a devoted following in the counterculture and New Age movements of the 1970s, with readers drawn to its systematic, practical approach to metaphysics. Academic and mainstream literary critics largely ignored her work, though it influenced figures in psychology and parapsychology. Roberts herself was ambivalent about her role as a channel, insisting on the integrity of the material while grappling with its public reception.
The afterlife
Jane Roberts's Seth Books remain foundational texts in the New Age and spiritual literature canon, with millions of copies in print and ongoing readership. Her ideas about reality creation and the nature of consciousness have influenced later writers such as Deepak Chopra and Gary Zukav, as well as practitioners of the Law of Attraction movement. The Seth Material continues to be studied in esoteric and psychological circles, and Roberts's work is periodically rediscovered by new generations of readers.
