Derek Walcott

1930–2017

On Derek Walcott

A brief life

Derek Walcott was born in 1930 in Castries, Saint Lucia, and passed away in 2017. Raised in a Methodist household in a predominantly Catholic society, he was deeply influenced by the colonial education system and the vibrant, multilingual culture of the Caribbean. He spent much of his adult life dividing his time between Saint Lucia, Trinidad, and the United States, where he held long-standing academic appointments.

On the page

Walcott’s body of work spans epic poetry, lyric verse, and drama, all characterized by a synthesis of classical European forms and Caribbean vernacular. His seminal collection 'In a Green Night' established his voice, while the epic 'Omeros' remains his most ambitious achievement, weaving Homeric structures into the history of the Antilles. His plays, such as 'Dream on Monkey Mountain', interrogate the psychological scars of colonialism through ritual and myth.

In their time

Walcott was recognized early as a major voice in post-colonial literature, though he faced criticism from some Caribbean intellectuals who felt his mastery of the English canon compromised his commitment to local identity. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1992, with the committee citing his 'great luminosity' and 'historical vision'. His work gained widespread academic and critical acclaim in both the United Kingdom and the United States throughout the latter half of the 20th century.

The afterlife

Walcott is now considered one of the essential poets of the 20th century, having permanently altered the landscape of English-language poetry by expanding its linguistic and geographic boundaries. His influence persists in the work of contemporary poets who navigate the tensions between imperial legacies and indigenous landscapes. He remains a central figure in the study of Caribbean literature and the development of post-colonial aesthetics.
